Programming Department

Lead Engineer, Core Technology Team

The core technology team are the "Marines" of development, performing the unglamorous technical heroics that keep pipelines humming, tools from crashing, load screens from appearing, threads from stalling, and games locked at 60Hz. Tech team members have both exceptional technical chops and the wisdom of experience to guide them in their support of our artists, designers, and gameplay programmers.

The BioShock team is looking for an exceptional individual to join us and direct this team through a combination of leadership, coding, and daily problem solving at the engine and pipeline level. This is a very challenging position and only senior candidates will be considered.

What you would be doing:

  • Extending and enhancing the Unreal Engine 3, middleware, and proprietary tech to address performance, platform, production, tools, and gameplay requirements
  • Integrating and testing new code drops from Epic and other middleware providers
  • Leading a team of engineers in the design and implementation of tools, pipeline and workflow enhancements, platform-specific subsystems, and optimizations
  • Working with the Technical Director and Lead Programmer to plan and execute major changes to core technology
  • Responsible for overall performance and quality on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 platforms

Requirements:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, desire to mentor other engineers, and ability to adapt to rapidly-changing requirements
  • Ability to focus upon and overcome complex technical challenges
  • At least 3 years in Technical Director, Lead Programmer or Senior Engine Programmer capacity
  • Shipped at least two commercial game titles, preferably from start to finish
  • Substantial experience making engine-level changes targeting PS2, PS3, and/or Xbox 360
  • Exceptional C++ proficiency and software engineering intuition

Things would that really make you stand out:

  • Extensive understanding of Unreal Engine 2.5 or 3 at the lowest levels
  • Low-level PS3 experience
  • Previous lead-level experience in two or more low-level areas such as graphics, physics, networking, asset conditioning and pipeline, or platform-specific optimization

Location: Boston, MA

Due to current government employment-visa-sponsorship restrictions, we are unable to consider foreign candidates unless they have an advanced degree from a US accredited university / college or a current US work visa

  • Working with the Technical, Artistic, and Design team leads to find workable solutions to our creative goals
  • Extending and enhancing the Unreal Engine 3 to address custom performance, production, tools, networking, and gameplay needs related to physics
  • Advising and/or overseeing other engineers on tasks requiring physics interaction
  • Working closely with our physics middleware vendor to identify and fix bugs and quality/performance issues
  • Responsible for overall physics performance and quality on PC, PS3, and XBox 360 platforms

Requirements:

  • Has shipped at least one commercial title with lead-level or significant physics-related responsibilities
  • Strong mathematical and analytical background, especially Newtonian mechanics and discrete/continuous physical simulation technologies
  • Good people skills and ability to adapt to rapidly-changing requirements
  • Demonstrable skill in the C++ programming language and software architecture concepts

Things would that really make you stand out:

  • Extensive engine-level Unreal Engine 3 experience
  • Extensive experience with Ageia or Havok physics middleware
  • Console programming experience, especially PS3
  • Graduate degree in physics, mechanical engineering, or applied math
  • Have written or contributed to a major commercial or open-source physics engine
