SCREENSHOT SCENARIO CONTEST TUTORIAL:
LEARNING TO PLAY 101

January 29, 2007

Over the next couple months, we’re going to be running a Screenshot Scenario Contest for you guys to see some exclusive new images and footage from BioShock, as well as learning some of the unique gameplay techniques that are integral to surviving within the city of Rapture.

To start the contest off, I’m going to show you a fairly simple scenario from one of the first areas of the game, and then give you a step-by-step walkthrough for two of the many possible ways you could go about solving this problem.

When the contest gets rolling, I’ll give you an all-new screenshot scenario and list the tools you have at your disposal for solving it. To play, you’ll write up your answer and email it to me in a text file. Two weeks after the contest starts, I’ll post the text of all the solutions I received that would work in the given scenario. I’ll also post a short gameplay video of the solution I deem “most creative”, which will be the official winner of the contest.

The winner of each scenario will receive a Cult of Rapture BioShock tee. Official contest rules will be up shortly.

Enjoy our first episode in our Screenshot Scenario Contest Tutorial, Learning to Play 101. Feel free to try your hand at solving the scenario a different way than what we show here, as well. We'll be following up on this tutorial up with a video showing yet another way to solve this puzzle.

THE SITUATION

While in the Kashmir Restaurant, you encounter an enemy wielding a pipe. As he comes to attack, you shoot him, but only hit him in the leg.

Wounded, but not fatally, he comes to attack you. You only have one bullet left in your pistol, but, as you can see from the first screen, you have the Electro Bolt plasmid (which is why the veins in your hand are glowing blue.) How do you stop this guy before he bludgeons you to smithereens?

SOLUTION ONE

If you are a good shot, you can blow him to bits with a headshot using your one remaining bullet. This is effective, and probably the fastest possible option, but dicey, as you never know if you may need that last bullet for another enemy waiting around the bend. And you can’t count on finding more in a timely fashion.

SOLUTION TWO

A more elegant solution is to notice your surroundings. Behind your enemy and to the right in the scenario screens, you see a dormant security bot lying on the ground. While turned off now, you can hack into it, turn it on, and make it your ally.

After a hack, the bot will work with you and protect you from this enemy without you having to fire your last shot.

Hacking is done through a minigame that appears when you interact with a machine. You have to be sure of your hacking skills when you play the hacking game. A successful hack will make the bot your ally until it is destroyed, but losing will trigger a security alarm, calling other bots into the room to hunt you down.

With many more bullets than you, this bot will hunt and track those who try and harm you until they are destroyed. And you still have your last bullet and Electro Bolt plasmids for the stickier situations that might arise in the future.
