BIOSHOCK HEADED TO A THEATER NEAR YOU
Last week cult members rejoiced over the news that BioShock will be made into a feature length film. AWESOME FAN ART BY BEN MAURO
In my internet wanderings yesterday, I happened upon a blog post at www.ripten.com about a guy who made some fantastic fan concept art for his vision of a BioShock 2. Now, I think it was the image with the gigantic whale that really made my jaw drop, but I wrote in to Ripten to find this wonderful artist, because I had to thank him. Dedication to a game like this just doesn't come every day.
I finally tracked down Ben Mauro, who was all but too happy to provide me with the artwork he did for a class, and a bit of a background on the project.
See all the artwork and his description here.

His choice? Three black links on each of his wrists.

ASSOCIATED PRESS NAMED BIOSHOCK BEST GAME OF 2007
AP named BioShock the top game of 2007, hailing the game "a first-person shooter turned morality play, a thinking person's action game, a piece of electronic fiction with a soul. There are many positive ways to describe this gripping game and they're all true. There's just nothing else like this eerie vision of an undersea social experiment gone horribly wrong."
BIOSHOCK NAMED GAME OF 2007 BY PASTE MAGAZINE
Paste Magazine named BioShock their favorite game of 2007 in their December/January issue, saying "if we only had one change to convert someone who still doubts the artistic potential of the video-game medium, the first five minutes of BioShock would make our case better than a fact-laden PowerPoint ever could."

BE YOUR OWN BIG DADDY
One of the most diehard Rapturians I have met to date created an amazing Big Daddy costume -- full-sized and weighing in at 57 pounds -- for the New York City Halloween parade. His creation spread quickly until I found him, and invited him to protect our 2K contingent at the Spike Video Game awards which aired this past Sunday evening.
Big Daddy Nathan escorted Greg Gobbi and Ken Levine down the red carpet and stood guard as they accepted the Game of the Year award. Now, Nathan is putting his drill aside and passing his suit along to the next willing Rapturian who wants to turn himself into a Bouncer, and is selling his costume on ebay.

UPDATE ON THE BIOSHOCK FIGURINE REPLACEMENT PROGRAM
Earlier this morning I sent out an email blast to enrolled customers who received a broken Big Daddy figurine with their BioShock Limited Edition detailing the status of the replacement program. Since then, customer service has gotten many emails about the program, so I thought it would be best to lay out all the requirements for the public!
Customers who enrolled in our replacement program between August 25th and November 12th will not have to ship back their broken Big Daddies to us. We figure you had waited long enough for your replacements, so within the next two weeks, we’ll begin shipping out both the new Big Daddies and the artbooks in the same package to you. Keep your first Big Daddy – super glue him back together, or stage him next to your new Big Daddy as if they were in an epic battle.
And for more details about the program beyond what I have announced, so here’s a quick FAQ that I think will solve most people’s remaining questions.

HANDMADE BIOSHOCK PLUSHIES
While browsing the BioShock forums, I happened upon user JunoLover who proudly displayed her handmade BioShock plushie. A lover of games and amazing with a needle, I immediately knew I must have one of her awesome creations.
A quick email later and JunoLover was happy to help out. A couple weeks later (I have no idea how she can make such things so quickly!) two Big Daddies arrived at the office -- one with angry red eye and the other with happy, glow-in-the-dark green ones. And JunoLover had made me a surprise -- each Big Daddy came with its own Little Sister!
Thanks, JunoLover, for being one of the coolest BioShock fans around, and your incredible BioShock plushies. My Big Daddy sits atop my TV and makes my day much, much brighter.
BIOSHOCK HALLOWEEN COSTUMES
Halloween is just around the corner (Wednesday, in fact!) and my inbox is beginning to fill up with pumpkins and costumes inspired by BioShock. If you're decking yourself out as a citizen of Rapture this Halloween, shoot me an email, and I'll add your image to the gallery.
Check out the gallery below for some kickass costumes I've already received.
BIOSHOCK WINS A BAFTA AWARD

WIN SOME SURROUND SOUND SPEAKERS FOR BIOSHOCK
2K is proud to partner with NHT (now hear this) and offer a sweepstakes to win a set of NHT Classic Series surround sound speakers (to play BioShock in an even MORE immersive atmosphere. Have you ever heard a Splicer screaming at you from behind? It's terrifying.)
The lucky winner will receive:
Two (2) NHT Classic Two speakers for the front
One (1) NHT Classic Two C Center speaker
Two (2) NHT Classic Absolute Zero speakers for the rear
One (1) NHT Classic Ten subwoofer
ONE SWEET BIG DADDY COSTUME
Joe Smith, his amazing wife, and several of their close friends, decided to turn themselves into some citizens of Rapture for the Necrinomicon convention. On a budget of $150 and over the course of three weeks, Joe and his group created perhaps the most amazing Big Daddy costume I have seen to date (winning them three awards at Necronomicon, I might add.)
We'll be helping him put the finishing touches on his amazing getup, for Halloween and any other conventions Joe might wish to strut his stuff Big Daddy style. And for those of you wondering how to make yourself into a Big Daddy, it seems to only take cardboard, paper mache, and a lot of innovation.
(And if anyone else decides to undergo a Rapturian transformation, please send me some pictures!)

GET WELL GAMERDAD
Andrew Bub, known around these parts as GamerDad, recently suffered a serious heart attack. GamerDad is an avid gamer and a great voice for the entire gaming community, and I want to extend my well wishes that he has a speedy recovery and is soon clacking away at his keyboard, giving us more sage advice about all things video games.
Below is a link to his site, which is currently being updated by his wife, GamerMom.

INFO ABOUT THE BIOSHOCK XBL UPDATE
Many of you have noticed that we updated BioShock via XBL and were wondering what changed. This update improves stability when loading autosaves and overall game stability, corrects audio during title menu loading, and addresses AI behaviors regarding use of health stations.
I've also heard that some of you have experienced stuttering and/or freezing issues after this update. If this is happening to you, clear the game cache by holding Left Bumper and Right Bumper as the game is booting up.
PHOTOS FROM THE BIOSHOCK APPRECIATION EVENT
On the evening of Monday, August 20th, 2007, just hours before BioShock would hit store shelves and go live across the US, and people everywhere would be diving into Rapture, we rented out the Felt Club in Boston to hold an Appreciation event to the fans and bloggers that made the BioShock community perhaps one of the coolest ever since the beginning of time (at least in my opinion). Over 300 people came from all corners of the gaming world to help celebrate how amazing the Cult of Rapture is.
We had our own Big Daddy, Little Sisters who so politely let you drink ADAM from a silver platter holding a pile of syringes, rows upon rows of the full BioShock game to play, four living (and terrifying) Splicers -- even Oscar The Punk made an appearance and played some of the songs featured on the Limited Edition EP.
It was an incredible evening, one that will go down in my top ten nights of all time. I want to thank you all, those of you who were there, and those of you who could not make it, for making this game's launch such an incredible experience.
Take a look at the pictures, and enjoy.
INTRODUCING THE BIOSHOCK ORCHESTRAL SCORE
Composer Garry Schyman created the orchestral masterpiece that serenades you through your journey into the heart of Rapture. Today, we are releasing the 12 tracks that create the eerie string compilation in Rapture so that you can take the world of BioShock wherever you go. We have archived these 12 mp3s into a zip file for you for easy download. Grab it and take a listen -- and remember the first moment setting eyes upon the sunken city, your first battle with a Splicer, when you first battled a Big Daddy, or the time you decided to save (perhaps harvest?) a Little Sister.

UPDATES ON SECUROM™, PC ACTIVATION, AND A TECHNICAL FAQ
We have been reading and listening to your frustrations over SecuROM, PC activation problems, and technical support issues since BioShock launched on Tuesday, and we've devised a plan to help.
Starting immediately, we will be upping the activation count to a 5 by 5 plan. We will be raising the maximum amount of computers a user can have BioShock installed on simultaneously from 2 to 5, and allowing a user to reinstall BioShock on each of those computers from 3 times to 5 times. Also, we have in the works a revoke tool which you will be able to run on your machine if you want to free up that key and move it to to another computer (this works very much like Steam or iTunes system). We are also working with SecuROM and 2K customer service, so that when you do need to call in support problems, you get answers to your questions faster, without much waiting or being bounced around. SecuROM has been given much more autonomy to help fix your problems quickly and effectively. I am personally sorry for anyone who got bounced around in the past couple days (I even think I contributed to this problem) and we're going to make sure that does not happen in the future.
As for other technical issues, we are bringing on a team of tech support that will be on the 2K forums 24/7 to help people resolve their technical issues. Our QA guys are in the offices and on the forums, too, reproducing issues and looking for workarounds and compiling information that they can put towards making you a patch and updating the knowledge base.
Also, we are aware that our activation server went down last night, stopping some of you from finishing your installs. The server is up and running now and we have corrected the problem that caused that crash.
Finally, we have released a FAQ, which you can view in full below (and will also be posted on the 2K Forums in the Technical Support area) that will help clear up a lot of questions and misinformation that has been floating around about SecuROM and PC activation.
And as for widescreen, we also want to say we completely understand a user's desire to augment their FOV. BioShock is a harrowing experience, but we don't want anyone to feel limited (or motion sick!). So we are in the process of working on an official PC patch to give widescreen PC users a choice to expand their horizontal FOV, and are investigating creating a similar update for the 360.
And finally, I want to personally congratulate Racer_S from the Widescreen Gaming Forums, and his awesome user patch to expand the widescreen FOV in BioShock. I'm currently tracking him down via email, but hopefully, he'll accept my gratitude, and maybe an Nvidia 8800 to boot.

BIOSHOCK BOOTH AT WIZARD WORLD
From August 9-12 in Chicago, BioShock blew out Wizard World 2007. We had a dome-shaped booth packed with 360s running the BioShock demo for convention-goers to play. The line was always full, and people crowded around the dome's doorway to catch a peek at the game. I never got tired of seeing people jump back from the TV screens at the sight of their first Splicer.
Check out the article for pictures of the booth, a Big Daddy statue that accompanied us, and amazing chalk art that was created outside the convention to honor BioShock.
THE TRUTH ABOUT WIDESCREEN
We understand there has been some concern about the implementation of widescreen mode in BioShock. Hopefully, we can clarify how we’ve chosen to do this.
The first thing we want to make clear is the mode we developed the game on and the optimal mode for playing the game is the widescreen mode. 90% of our development stations were widescreen displays: artists, programmers and designers.
- BioShock was primarily developed and tuned for widescreen mode. Artists and designers worked with widescreen displays and chose a field of view (FOV) that best reflected their intentions with respect to the way the world is perceived, the perceived speed of movement of the player relative to the world and the amount of the world they wanted to be viewed for the best game-play experience. We went through dozens of iterations and finally settled upon a widescreen aspect ratio that best suited the gameplay experience.
- When playing in widescreen modes the game makes use of the full screen resolution, and does not crop or stretch a lower resolution image into a wide screen one. For example, at 720p the game renders natively to the full 1280x720 resolution.
- Once this FOV was established, we chose to keep exactly the same horizontal FOV for standard def displays, so as not to in any way alter the gameplay experience.
- Instead of cropping the FOV for 4:3 displays and making all 4:3 owners mad in doing so, we slightly extended the vertical FOV for standard def mode: we never wanted to have black bars on people’s displays. (This way, everybody is happy…) This does mean that people playing on a standard def display see slightly more vertical space, but, this does not significantly affect the game-play experience and, we felt that it best served our goal of keeping the game experience as close as possible to the original design and art vision on both types of displays. Reports of the widescreen FOV being a crop of the 4:3 FOV are completely false.
One thing we can assure you that all these decisions were made with the best interests of the game in mind. We didn’t save any money or development time by choosing this set of parameters. We did what we thought was the best thing for the game: developing and optimizing it for widescreen displays, and making the decision not to do the usual crop for 4:3 displays. As a consumer, you certainly have the right to disagree.
We understand that not all users might not be happy with these choices and we will be looking into options for allowing users to adjust FOV settings manually. But as we mentioned earlier, changes to video game code do not happen in minutes or hours. We appreciate your understanding.
GAYGAMER LOVES BIOSHOCK
Gaygamer.net has put up an awesome new banner on the top of their site as an homage to BioShock's release today. I think it's pretty sweet, so go on and take a look.
OFFICIAL BIG DADDY FIGURINE ANNOUNCEMENT
There have been some rumors about the Big Daddy figurines including in the BioShock Limited Edition being damaged. Here's the deal about them:
As often happens with large shipments, a small percentage of the Big Daddy units reached retailers damaged. Since it stinks to get a broken figurine on launch day, we're putting a plan into place if you do receive a damaged Big Daddy.
Go to www.2kgames.com/bioshock/busted and, later this week, enter your info if you have received a broken figurine. We will ship you a pre-paid box to send your damaged Big Daddy back to us. And since it will take some time to get your new Big Daddy to you, will will be shipping you a printed BioShock art book to help tide you over until your Big Daddy is back to you.
WAIT FOR THE OFFICIAL DEMO DOWNLOAD TONIGHT AT 7 PM EDT
While there are versions of the BioShock demo available now on the web for download, I recommend you waiting until 7 PM tonight to download yours. The official release is timed so that you can optimize your system with the latest drivers that will make the game run as smoothly as possible. Running BioShock with outdated drivers may impact your performance, so if you do happen to play the demo before the 7 PM launch time, please be sure to check your system again after grabbing the latest and greatest drivers as a true measure of performance and quality.
A MESSAGE FROM KEN
Ken Levine posted this to the 2K forums. I found his words wise, and decided to repost for you all:
If you're going to buy the game this week, I highly recommend you stay away from any forums that might have spoilers until you play the game through. Our goal in making the game was to thrill and, often, surprise you.
Please don't ruin other people's experience by revealing secrets in unmarked threads, and if you want to enjoy the game to its fullest, stay away from any threads that might ruin the fun for you. With a game like BioShock, it will really make a difference.
Best,
Ken
PC DEMO COMING TO YOU ON MONDAY
The wait is nearly over. At 7 PM EST the BioShock PC demo will go live for you to enjoy. We will have exclusive pre-loading at Fileplanet. Set your watches for 7 o'clock!
IMPORTANT: Please be sure to download the latest drivers from ATI and Nvidia that will be available Monday for best performance with your video cards.
BIOSHOCK PODCAST: LEVEL DESIGN IN BIOSHOCK
In our twelfth and final podcast, I am back with Dean and Bill again to talk about the work they put in to creating the world of Rapture, and how many iterations it took to get each area just right.
THE LAST BIOSHOCK Q&A
Last week, I rounded up some of your questions on the 2K forums to compile a final Q&A with the BioShock team. And while there were way more questions than we had time to answer in depth, I pulled some of the best ones and sat down with Ken during Wizard World this weekend too give you one more Q&A before BioShock ships. Enjoy!
GET YOUR BIOSHOCK ARTBOOK
Way back when I was creating the BioShock Limited Edition, I took a poll for what you guys wanted to see in the box. And while we managed to put your top 3 choices in – the Making of DVD, Soundtrack CD, and Big Daddy Figurine, we just couldn’t manage a BioShock artbook.
But with a game as beautiful as BioShock, that just didn’t sit right with me. Because everyone should be able to experience the beauty of BioShock, see the concept art and visualize the evolution of building such a revolutionary game.
So, with the help of the BioShock team and an amazing art designer, I put together a BioShock artbook for everyone to download. Here it is, in all its glory, in two PDF versions: a smaller, ebook download, and a more hi-resolution version that you can take to your local printshop and bind.
The one thing I’d recommend is skipping over Ken’s foreword until after you’ve played the game, as it holds some spoilers you might want to keep secret your first playthrough is complete.
Other than that, and without further ado, I present to you BioShock: Breaking the Mold.
Download the BioShock Artbook.

FreshCotton.com is running a BioShock Design Contest for our awesome fans in the Netherlands. There are several really cool designs up, so head on over there and check it out.
LEVEL ART DESIGN
Designing Rapture to be an immersive, realistic city was no small feat. And to create a utopia, then tear it to pieces -- it took many iterations.
I present to you just a few of the many level sketches and pieces of concept art that were mocked up when trying to build the world of Rapture. It all started with a simple piece of paper and a single pen.
BIOSHOCK PC BLOWOUT
You've heard a lot about BioShock in the past few months, and seen a ton of footage and screenshots from the Xbox 360™ version of the game. And while both PC and 360 look alike, Irrational has spent a ton of time (and used most of their Australia office staff) creating an amazing and unique experience for the PC gamer. Rethinking the HUD from the ground up and retooling the controls to work perfectly with a keyboard and mouse, the PC version of BioShock deserves its own moment to shine. Which I am now giving you.
This update includes a podcast talking about the PC version of BioShock, brought to you by the Aussie gurus who made this version a reality, a first look at PC screenshots including the HUD and other PC-specific features, and a rundown on the PC specifications you'll need to run this game, as well as some insight into how well different configurations will churn out the graphics and gameplay of Rapture.
Read more about the PC version of BioShock.
MUSIC 4 GAMES TALKS ABOUT THE MUSIC OF BIOSHOCK
Music 4 Games sits down with BioShock composer Garry Schyman and talks about his experience making the beautiful sounds of BioShock.
YOUR CHANCE TO WIN A CULT OF RAPTURE TEE SHIRT
I've gotten my hands on some Cult of Rapture tee shirts for those who are truly devoted. Printed for both men and women, they are in limited supply, so I'm going to run a random drawing for those who want one.
UPDATES TO THE FAN ART GALLERY
The Cult of Rapture has been noted as one of the most active and devoted groups that has ever emerged before a game even launched. Your artwork has even been featured on Kotaku.com.
With the help of the 2K moderators, I have rounded up some new additions to the fan art gallery. In order of appearance, I'd like to thank forum members Afflictor, Bioshock_FTW, Darths, GH_Illustrations, KORNdog, Newbeing, and Someguy for their contributions.
See the full scale artwork in the gallery.
BIOSHOCK PODCAST: THE STORY OF ANDREW RYAN
Ken Levine joins me today to talk about Andrew Ryan, the founder of Rapture and the mastermind who made the city under the sea. Ken gives insight into the creative process behind dreaming up such a character, and also fills in a little backstory behind such the infamous man.
SOUNDS OF RAPTURE
Many of you have asked for some sound bites taken from Rapture, and today, you get your first taste. Masterminded by the sound gurus of Irrational, these clips were constructed by Emily Ridgway, Audio Designer, Patrick Balthrop and Justin Mullins, Sound Assistant, Carlos Cuello, Audio Programmer, and Eric Brosius, Sound Contractor. You will get to hear snippets from the Gene Banks scattered around the city, as well as hear excerpts from some battles with Splicers and a Big Daddy. Then, we have a Q&A with Emily and Patrick talking more in depth on how they created the sounds in BioShock.
BIOSHOCK PODCAST: THE PHYSICS BEHIND BIOSHOCK
Josh Downer and Ian Bond talk about the physics that make BioShock run. They detail some of the most daunting tasks of the game and give an inside look at what makes the creatures in Rapture look so alive.
PLASMID VIDEOS UPLOADED TO THE CULT
Plasmid advertisements from Ryan Industries have been uploaded in our downloads section. Check out Winter Blast, Insect Swarm, Telekinesis, Cyclone Trap, and Security Beacon Plasmids.
CULT OF RAPTURE ICONS
Cult members have been asking for more artwork to create their own space in Rapture. To start, we've made some icons: 48x48 for use with most IM clients, 80x80 (the standard size for our 2K forums) and 256x256, which you can scale for any other needs you may dream up.
PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE FINALIZED LIMITED EDITION BIG DADDY FIGURINE
The Big Daddy figurine has been finalized! Standing 6 inches tall, he looms at my desk, guarding my drill against the plastic World of Warcraft orc that is trying to claim territory. Made of resin and hand painted, he is a work of art.

HAIKU CONTEST FUN!
I'm also starting a haiku contest and will be giving away 10 Cult of Rapture themes and gamerpics to the best haiku that captures of the feeling of Rapture. I'm leaving it up to interpretation beyond that -- make me laugh, make me cry, make tingles run down my spine, it's up to you.
All entries must be submitted into the official Cult of Rapture Haiku Contest forum linked below to be judged. The contest runs until Monday, June 4th when I'll close the thread and pick my 20 winners.
NOTE: For those of you who need brushing up on the form of a haiku, here are the rules: Seventeen-syllable verse form, arranged in three lines of five, seven and five syllables.
Post your haiku in the official forum thread now
AN EXCLUSIVE LOOK AT THE LITTLE SISTERS OF RAPTURE
Little Sisters are perhaps the most important citizens of Rapture, but little is known about them. Who are they? Where did they come from? And most importantly, how can the player interact with the Little Sister during his time in this underwater city?
I sat down with Ken Levine, Creative Director at Irrational Games, and asked him the tough questions many in the media, and on the forums, have been posing about the Little Sisters in BioShock. In this exclusive podcast, Ken and I talk about what the Little Sister is, and why Irrational chose to use the form of a child in this upcoming shooter. We also discuss what Harvesting and Rescuing really means, the moral ramifications of having the Little Sister in the game, and even if Irrational changed the Little Sister, and your interactions with her, due to public (or publisher) pressure.
FIRST LOOK AT THE LIMITED EDITION BIG DADDY FIGURINE
We've already announced that there will be a soundtrack CD, a Making of DVD, and a Big Daddy figurine in the Limited Edition box. But until Friday, I had not seen anything about the Big Daddy prototype.
You all told me to make it good, and I assure you, this delivers. Even for those of you out there that said that figurines are for kids, I think this one will blow you away.
Click here to see more of the Big Daddy figurine.
THE BIOSHOCK COVER ART CONTEST WINNERS
We had over 150 awesome submissions to our BioShock Limited Edition Cover Art Contest, and they were all stellar. But, after much ado, we narrowed down the entries to twelve finalists, of which five were put to the test in front of a panel of 2K and Irrational judges. We are now proud to announce our winners, and showcase the remaining 9, which I am deeming honorable mentions, and will receive exclusive Cult of Rapture tees for their hard work and awesome art.
Click here to see the winners.
SPLICER ART SKETCHES
Splicers are among the many enemies you'll encounter in BioShock. Once some of the best minds in the world, these people chose to leave the world above and become citizens of Rapture. They then began to morph and adapt their bodies to optimize their wits, the physique, anything they could dream up perfecting, they augmented. Sometimes, to horrible ends.
GET YOUR BIOSHOCK FANKIT
Some have asked for a BioShock fankit to make their own blogs and websites about BioShock. While I know we already have a lot of artwork, screenshots, and the like out on the web for you to use, we decided to make a couple more goodies for you to represent the Cult of Rapture and BioShock in your own creative ways. Download the fankit, and be sure to email me with the address of your site when it goes up. I'll make sure to post it here.
Also, there are some new screenshots in this pack for you to see, and I'll also post them in the full article.
BIOSHOCK LOVES THREADLESS WINNER ANNOUNCED
The winner of the BioShock Loves Threadless contest has been announced! There were a ton of great entries for this competition, so judging was tough, but we are proud to present "The Leftover." Visit www.threadless.com to pick up one in your size, and spread the word of Rapture.
WHAT'S IN THE WATER?
The water in BioShock is one of the most fascinating aspects, technically and visually, of the game. I would argue it's the most realistic water I've ever seen in game. And, as Rapture is an underwater city, and is drowning as your character enters it, water is, of course, an integral part of the story.
Today we're going to focus on water, first with a video that highlights some water in Rapture, and then with a Q&A I had two water gurus at Irrational: Stephan Alexander, FX Artist, and Jesse Johnson, Graphics Programmer. They were very excited to talk about all aspects of building the water in BioShock, so I hope you enjoy.
DX10 UPDATE
Many of you have been asking if BioShock would utilize DX10 feature set. The official answer is that yes, BioShock will be utilizing DX10. However, for those of you who won't be upgrading by August, don't worry. BioShock will also run with DX9.
THE LATEST NEWS ON THE BIOSHOCK LE
We have tallied up the votes, read your comments, and are happy to announce the details of the BioShock Limited Edition. Available on August 21st (the same day as the regular BioShock edition), the LE will include a Big Daddy figurine, a “Making Of” DVD, and a soundtrack CD. The LE packaging will also be an embossed graphic designed by the winner of the Cover Art Contest going on now at www.cultofrapture.com.
The BioShock Limited Edition will be available to US and Canada exclusively at GameStop and EB for US$59.99 (PC LE) and US$69.99 (Xbox 360™ LE). The Limited Edition will also be available in other territories and details about ordering a copy will be coming soon.
I’d like to personally thank everyone who participated in signing the petition for the BioShock Limited Edition and those who voted about what should go inside the box. We had over 26,000 responses to our poll, and those votes were the deciding factor in what we choose to put in the Limited Edition. We wanted to make the package affordable, but valuable and special for everyone purchasing it, and I think we did just that.
I’ll be sure to post pictures of the packaging and goodies inside as they become available!
NOTE: I changed the sentence “The Limited Edition will also be available in Europe and details about ordering a copy will be coming soon” to say “other territories” instead of “Europe” as we have not yet ruled out any regions for the Limited Edition.
DESIGN THE BIOSHOCK LIMITED EDITION BOX
Yes, you read that correctly. It started with an online petition from a fan on the 2K forums, imploring us to make a BioShock limited edition. 19,692 signatures later, I opened up a poll on the Cult of Rapture asking BioShock devotees what they would like to see in the box.
Now I ask you, what would you like ON the box?
To give you some backstory, this idea began because of a fan in the 2K forums, Rapture_Tourist gave us an awesome idea with his very detailed fan art of a possible BioShock Limited Edition. We loved the feeling of his etched metal casing, and want to run with it. (See his design here.)
So now, for the next two weeks, I’ll be collecting submissions for designs that could go on the front of the BioShock Limited Edition box.
Find out more about the contest now.

BIOSHOCK PODCAST: THE EVOLUTION OF BIOSHOCK

Thanks to forum moderator Jackinthebox (who created our fan art header), we have collected all the fan art from the 2K forums and are making an official gallery to display the work. ADVERTISEMENTS OF RAPTURE
Many have already caught glimpses of the advertisements in Rapture from screenshots and trailers and asked to see more. These are a few of the ads and posters that line the halls of BioShock's underwater city, a chilling display of how other-worldy this civilization is.
Yesterday around 6 PM, EST, I announced that if we collected 5000 signatures on a petition, I could convince 2K to give us a BioShock Limited Edition.
By 11.15 PM, EST, we had met that number. We're still climbing at 14,000, blowing out all my expectations, and then some.
I think I danced into the office today. And now I'm proud to announce to you that 2K will be making a BioShock Limited Edition for both Xbox 360 and PC.
Now, to the nitty gritty. There are a bunch of polls and threads popping up asking what should go in the box. We've come this far, why not let you, the fans, make the official choice? So now I ask: What would you like in your BioShock Limited Edition?
Vote for your top pick here, and we'll use the winning choices to help us decide what to include.
I've had quite a few people ask me if there will be a BioShock collector's edition. Then, today, an enterprising fan made a petition asking 2K to make one. So I talked with some people who were older and wiser than me, and pled the case of the fans. And if we get 5000 signatures on this petition, I have gotten word that they'll make a limited edition of BioShock.
So what do you say? Think we can do it? Think we can get 5000 signatures?
I think we can.
The next Community Q&A is now here. These answers come directly from Ken, and the questions range from particular devices used to tell story in BioShock to what Ken has been playing recently.
A new BioShock trailer is up exclusively on eurogamer.net, giving you a better look at Rapture and full of some great, creepy sounds. Check it out.
Congratulations to user Joe Flood and his winning answer to the first screenshot scenario contest. His answer was voted the most creative for the scenario, and we filmed the killing blows of this melee attack for your viewing pleasure.
The Cult of Rapture is blossoming, especially on our official 2K forums. In the BioShock area, there is an active thread where some really amazing fan art has been popping up, and is too great to go unnoticed. Check it out here and then hop on our fan art thread and post some of your own BioShock artwork.
Today we are joined by Dean Tate, Designer, and Chris Kline, Lead Programmer, to talk about their experiences working at Irrational and on BioShock, as well as how they got into the gaming industry, and where some of their inspiration comes from.
Mo Tejerina is back with his art progression of the gene bank, a machine in Rapture that you will find yourself using quite frequently. Originally called a "plasmi-quik", this progression shows how the decor of Rapture went from industrial to art deco.

We have created two new BioShock wallpapers for you, as well as added more high-resoltions in both standard and widescreen for your downloading pleasure.

Let the countdown begin!
Welcome to our first screenshot scenario contest! Our first battle takes place in the Medical Pavilion in Rapture, against a grenadier. Good luck, and happy submissions!
The official 2K forums are now open! The official meeting place for the Cult of Rapture, the BioShock forums will be your place to communicate with me, the team at Irrational, and of course, other devoted citizens of Rapture.
Episode 19 of Played features an hour-long interview with Ken Levine, who talks about his opinions on upcoming games, titles he has worked on in the past, his philsophies about the industry, and, of course, BioShock.
For our third BioShock podcast, Eric and I talk with Ken Levine again, but this time take a closer look at the world behind the game. We explore the city of Rapture, and get a little bit more backstory about this secret underwater utopia that went horribly wrong.
Irrational Games Technical Art Director Nate Wells shows us his early sketches of the Big Daddy, one of the most recognized characters from BioShock.
See the early Big Daddy sketches.
We've created you some BioShock wallpapers in both widescreen and regular resolutions. Check them out.
I've collected more questions from the forums -- and those that I've been emailed directly -- and spent time talking with Ken himself and the team at Irrational for answers. I still have some Q&A outstanding, so if you don't see your question up here yet, don't give up hope! I still have a slew of questions pending. And, of course, many things about BioShock are still secret. You wouldn't want us spoiling anything, would you?
Today I am joined by 2K Marketing Coordinator Eric Monacelli and Ken Levine to talk about Player Choice in BioShock. We talk about the variety of playstyles that you can toy with in Rapture, and the diversity of the world itself. Ken is really in his element during this podcast, giving us some great insight into his thinking behind the game, and many of the reasons he decided to focus on innovating player choice in BioShock.
If you like to manage your podcasts through itunes, you can now add the BioShock podcast to that list! Search on BioShock in the itunes music store to subscribe to our podcast, and get the latest episodes as soon as they are released.
Ken talks with Stephen Totilo at MTV news about the making of BioShock, "a game that mixes heaps of bullets, guns and blood with dashes of philosophy, economics and architecture."
Last week, I went up to Irrational Games in Boston to do some work and meet with the team. I've heard from several of you that you wanted to see what it looks like to work at Irrational, so I've provided some photos of the guys. There aren't too many crazy shenanigans right now (working hard at Beta for you!), but I'm sure this isn't the last you've seen of them, and this is the least of the wackiness you'll glimpse before now and June.
Check out the Irrational offices here.
Gamasutra has put up the transcript of their recent podcast with one of the BioShock writers, Susan O'Connor. You can check it out over at their website.
Over the next couple months, we’re going to be running a Screenshot Scenario Contest for you guys to see some exclusive new images and footage from BioShock, as well as learning some of the unique gameplay techniques that are integral to surviving within the city of Rapture.
This week, I’m going to show you a fairly simple scenario from one of the first areas of the game, and then give you a step-by-step walkthrough of how you could go about solving your problem. Learn how to play here.
Next Generation interviews Ken Levine about his much anticipated game, BioShock, coming out this June. At 55 minutes, this podcast is sure to give you some new tidbits about the game, and tide you over until the next time Ken talks (which I promise, won't be long!)
Today I interview Melissa Miller, a 2K producer working on BioShock. She's spent several weeks up in Boston, logging hundreds of hours playing BioShock in its various stages of development, and could be called the resident guru of the game. At times, I think she'd be more comfortable if her hands were glowing blue from plasmids, rather than their normal, pinkish hue.
I've been getting quite a few questions concerning when BioShock is coming out. Here's the official word: BioShock will come out for both the PC and 360, in North America and Europe, in June of 2007. I don't have an exact day yet, but you can mark down the lovely month of June for BioShock goodness.
Ask and ye shall receive. I scoured the forums to find some of the most asked questions about BioShock and shot them over to Irrational for answers. Don’t see something you still want to know, or have an additional request for me, 2K, or Irrational? Shoot me an email and I’ll get you an answer as soon as possible.
I'll be heading up to Irrational Games next week to have some quality time with Ken Levine. Have a question for him? Email me and I'll post the answers I get soon.
Irrational Games artist Mauricio Tejerina gave me access to the art progression for the shotgun used in BioShock. From original idea sketches to some of the final renders, Mo explains how the gun adapted and changed over time to be what you will use and upgrade in Rapture. See the full feature here.
Cruising the forums around the turn of the year is always a good time to find out what people are looking forward to playing. You get a list of best and worst games of the past year, as well as the most anticipated titles coming out. To my delight, many top 10 anticipated game lists from editors and consumers alike have BioShock ranked near the top.
While I’ll leave it up to you to tell me why BioShock is on your top 10 list, here are some soundbites of why gaming editors are eagerly awaiting BioShock this spring:

Greetings from Rapture. Since its original conception by Andrew Ryan, the city has undergone drastic change. Survival here is now for truly only the fittest, bravest, and most willing. While we have been plagued by civil war, all hope is not yet lost from this once beautiful society, and I bring it upon you to help revitalize what was once a hero's dream. It will take all your intuition, and upmost of dedication, but I believe that by banding together, you, the devoted, can bring Rapture back to what it once was, and then help to boost it into what it always should have become.
Stay tuned for updates as our fledgling society grows, and please contact me with questions you may have, or support you wish to provide.

SHOTGUN ART PROGRESSION
BIOSHOCK IS ONE OF THE 10
MOST ANTICIPATED GAMES OF 2007
“Given how terrible the shooter catalog was in 2006, we're about due for a few impressive shooters in 2007. Irrational's BioShock comes in very high on our list of most anticipated games. The developers disturbing, deco-styled, deep sea dystopia is easily one of the creepiest locations we've seen. Interesting choices, loads of atmosphere and a bizarre story make this one a frontrunner for game of the year.”

“BioShock has been making waves ever since it surfaced.. and we're positive that it's going to make a seismic splash when it's released on 360 and PC next spring.”

“Bioshock has long been "one to watch" for many gamers, and is quickly looking to be one of the 360's biggest hits of 2007. And, if there was ever any doubt in your mind that this game is going to be huge, your worries can now be quickly slung to the bottom of the sea in a lead coffin, because as the official site proves, Bioshock is looking amazing.”

“…the game’s screenshots and gameaplay [sic] movies already look outstanding with an art style that resembles a slightly twisted version of 1940’s art deco. Irrational’s track record for games is already solid and we hope that BioShock will be their best game to date.””

”Oozing creepiness, it also comes across as a game that could genuinely be quite disturbing - wicked! And we've said it before but we'll say it again: the decision to use an Art Deco style for the environments is genius. Plus, we're finding the mixture of cool and odd characters utterly compelling.”

”Transposing the action from the abandoned space station setting of System Shock to an art deco undersea city, designed as a mid-1900s utopia before the discovery of a powerful bio-engineering substance made it all go horribly wrong, has given the game a unique visual style to complement its extraordinary gameplay - and is just another reason on the growing list of reasons that Bioshock screams "instant classic" at us.”
